The REO News from August 1951 reports that the local population of Aughrim were very friendly.
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
"Aughrim Rural Area: From the report of Mr. F. O’Driscoll, R.A.E., we learn that one of the principal hindrances to construction in the area was the friendliness of the local population. Visits to the area office by committees and by individuals for the purpose of getting supply were numerous. Economics had to be discussed ad infinitum and when that was finished the visitors were ready to discuss many other topics. Backsliding was not as serious a problem as in other areas. 23 consumers were lost, but a gain of 38 is recorded, with a resultant increase in the revenue of £136. There will be some increase in the cost, but the Area Engineer expects the percentage return to be maintained. Board sales were very low, amounting to only £130, but we were very pleased to see that 60 outside lights had been installed.
Mr. O’Driscoll also records with satisfaction that the Galway County Council gave a £5 grant to each cottager to cover the cost of wiring, without demanding any increase in the rent. One of the conditions of this grant was that a plug had to be installed. – “O si sic omnes.”"
