The REO News from July 1955 tells us among other things about the rich arable land in Ballindangan. This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
"Ballindangan Rural Area, Co. Cork: Situated at the lower edge of the Golden Vale of Munster at the foot of the Galtee Mountains, Ballindangan Area for the greater part contains rich arable land. With the well-known Mitchelstown Creamery operating in and around the area, the main source of income is derived from dairying. Mr. Buckley, R.A.E., points out that the farms are much smaller than one would expect, and that the farmers, although reasonably well off are loath to enter into any undertaking which would entail the outlay of money.
Backsliding presented an early problem in the area and the original figure of 248 economic acceptances fell at one stage to 200. New acceptances, however, brought the final figure to 240 but the percentage return dropped from 6.2 to 5.98.
Mr. Buckley, for whom this was his first area, pays tribute to his supervisor, C. Cronin, on his excellent handling of affairs. This was also Mr. Cronin’s first area as supervisor and the majority of the gang were doing area work for the first time, having previously been engaged on 110 kV line construction.
Although the area was under construction for five weeks before Mr. D. O’Regan, A.O., could be made available sales to the value of £723 were made. It was pointed out that future prospects for sales."This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
