The advantages of electrification were commented on during the switch on ceremony in Ballingarry according to The REO News from January 1949.
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
"Performing the Opening Ceremony at Ballingarry, Very Rev. Canon Fitzgerald said that Rural Electrification was a great advance from the days of the dip and tallow candle, and the crude lamps which almost invariably gave trouble, – globes and mantles breaking just when most needed. Then they had the experience of trying to manage with a pint or so of oil per month.
Canon Fitzgerald referred to the fact that the electric induction coil which made such things as rural electrification possible had been invented by V. Rev. Dr. Callan of Maynooth College in 1836."
