""Ballinure Rural Area, Co. Tipperary:
Ballinure, Mr. McBride tells us, is one of the less prosperous parts of Co. Tipperary, bordering as it does on Lyttleton bog and, particularly in the northern section of the area, a considerable amount of rock was met.
Although the area is 18 sq. miles in extent, the original authorisations covered only 116 consumers. About 40% of the total premises in the area are cottages, the tenants depending on the adjacent turf bog and the Co. Council for casual employment. Another 40% are very small holdings, and the remaining 20% are mostly dairy suppliers who, strangely enough, have no intention of installing milking machines in the near future.
103 additional consumers were gained and authorisation was issued for them, and the sum total was that we expected a return of 5.3% from 219 consumers. In actual fact, 226 consumers had a return of 5.1%.
Considering the type of area, it is very satisfactory to note that sales amounted to £967, and at some time a visit by the salesman should be considered. Mr. McBride lost his Supervisor, Mr. Walshe, for two months due to illness but one of his linesmen, Mr. J. Feeney, and his mapping man, Mr. T. White, stepped into the gap and combined admirably to make a composite substitute.
Mr. McBride pays tribute to them for their effort, noting that both have since left the gang to take up appointments as town linesmen. Mr. McBride also pays tribute to Mr. K. O’Connor who took over duties of A.O. from Mr. Reddy after a month, and gives him credit for the major part in the final sales total. Compliments are also paid to the District Staff and to the staff of Materials Division."
