Rocky ground and tree clad mountains caused some problems in Ballymurphy as reported in the area notes from The REO News of February 1957.
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
"Ballymurphy Rural Area, Co. Carlow: In Ballymurphy also the bogey of low average spans reared its head with rocky ground and tree‑clad mountain slopes to add to the difficulties. Mr. M. F. Keaveny, R.A.E., attributes these headaches to the Blackstair Mountains and Mount Leinster which form the eastern boundary of the area. The Warsop drill gave up the ghost but a locally owned compressor was pressed into service, to enable the work to proceed.
The number of consumers increased by nearly one‑third from the original figure of 303 anticipated to 397 at the close of the area, but Mr. Keaveny was unable to say what the final effect on the financial return would be. Backsliding proved troublesome and no assistance was obtained from whatever committee originally existed in the area.
Sales made by Mr. Manahan, A.O., reached the fine total of £1,515 and in this connection a gracious tribute is paid to the assistance given by the mobile demonstration unit which visited the area. The sales included 13 pumps, 2 welders and 2 motors, together with the usual quota of washing machines and other domestic appliances. Outside lights were a popular feature and over 75% of the householders installed at least one.
Mr. Keaveny concludes his report with thanks to Mr. P. Grace, Supervisor and the chargehands for the high standard of work in the area."
