This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
"Ballyorgan Rural Area, Co. Limerick: Construction work in Ballyorgan, Mr. Scallan tells us in his report, was fairly easy. Very little hard rock was encountered, but the subsoil was mostly shale and this made digging work a little slower than usual. One of the other minor difficulties was that it was impossible to obtain an office and stores in a central location, and great care had to be exercised to keep the miles‑per‑unit within reasonable limits.
Originally there were 262 economic acceptances, yielding a revenue of £1,440 with a nett capital cost of £22,229. The final figures show 283 consumers with revenue at £1,694 and the nett capital cost of £24,360. Based on 22% overheads the return improved from 5.50% to 5.71%.
The original allocation for labour, including contingencies, was £5,194, but the actual costs amount to £5,008. This very desirable result Mr. Scallan credits to his supervisor, Mr. Gibblin, and his chargehands.
Sales amounted to £907, including 12 cookers, 7 Burco Boilers, 2 water pumps and the usual kettles and irons. Outside sales were also good including 5 cookers and a large number of kettles and irons. Practically all the new consumers bought radio sets."
