The REO News from June 1956 reports that bog and water caused difficulties in Carracastle.
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
“Carracastle Rural Area, Co. Mayo: In spite of the construction difficulties of bog and water, (only to be expected in Co. Mayo), we are glad to learn from Mr. Winning that the return for the area improved from 5.25% to 6.0%. In the details of construction we noted particularly an excellent transport figure of 2.82 miles per unit.
Sales by the Area Organiser, Mr. McCaul, reached a total of £529 which though it may seem small is regarded as reasonable for an area where the average holding is about six acres. It was very satisfactory to note indeed that even in this small total 5 water pumps were included. Immediate prospects for sales are not very likely.
Mr. Winning has now been transferred to Cork II District and in a farewell message has offered his tribute and his thanks to his supervisor, Mr. Slevin, his clerk, his chargehands and all the crew, and to the staff of Sligo District Office.”
