There was a high level of sales in Carrignavar according to The REO News from May 1953.
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
"Carrignavar Rural Area, Co. Cork: The total acceptances in Carrignavar fell from 276 to 270. The principal cause was the incidence of 31 backsliders which rendered four others uneconomic and the contrary gain was six less at a total of 29.
On face value the area return dropped from 7.63% to 6.96%. However, Mr. Kennedy, R.A.E. points out that there was an increase in costs between the design date and the construction period and that if the new costs had applied to the design the actual result would be an increase from 6.86% to 6.96%.
A very pleasing feature of the report is that Mr. Montgomery, the Area Organiser, produced his now customary high level of sales, amounting to £1,400. It is also pleasing to note that his sales included 14 Pressure Pumps. Other items were: 3 Grain Grinders; 7 3‑Plate Cookers; 3 Burco Boilers; 1 Washing Machine; 1 Food Cooker and 1 Welder. There were 14 wiring contractors in the area and among their sales we note that there were 213 Radios; 12 Cookers; 4 Washing Machines; 2 Pressure Pumps; 6 Non‑Pressure Pumps; 9 1‑H.P. Motors (chiefly for Milking Machines); 1 30‑H.P. Motor; 1 10‑H.P. Motor; 3 Refrigerators; 40 Kettles and 53 Irons.
In defence of a unit cost of 42/10d. Mr. Kennedy points out that some of the labourers employed lived up to 12 miles outside the area boundary and that the average distance cycled per man per day was about 25 miles.
Mr. Kennedy does not seem much hope for post‑development for some considerable time but he thinks that consumption in the area should be high and that after a short period there will be scope for further sales."
