There was a large quantity of rock in Cartron as reported in The REO News from June 1956.
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
"Cartron Rural Area, Co. Roscommon: Mr. Sean Foley and his crew in Cartron left the area last October with the satisfying knowledge that they had given supply to 81% of the residents and had improved the financial return of the area from 4.94% to 5.4%.
He seemed surprised to find such a large quantity of rock particularly in the northern portion of the area and estimates that about 50% of all holes had to be blasted. Prospects for post‑development in the area are reasonably good but will probably be slow and may indeed necessitate the visit of a canvasser when we get to the stage that we feel such action is justified.
Sales at £691 could not be regarded as high particularly as a room in the office containing a shop window was set aside for display purposes. Future prospects are fairly good but in the main for the smaller appliances, and it is not expected that cookers, washing machines or farm appliances will make a very heavy demand for some time to come."
