The REO News from February 1952 tells us that the outside light was very popular in Clogheen.A scanned page from the ESB REO magazine about the Clogheen Rural AreaThis digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
“Clogheen Rural Area: According to Mr. Healy, R.A.E. and Mr. Nix, A.O., two major setbacks were encountered in Clogheen Rural Area. One was their eviction from their first stores, (a hatchery), at the start of the hatching season and the other was the 20:1 ‘bombshell’ which came through just as they were ready to leave and delayed them for a further three weeks. In spite of this, they must feel well satisfied with their final result. Of the original 312 acceptances, 6 houses had become vacant and they had 13 backsliders. However, they gained 102 new consumers, giving a final total of 395. This increased the Fixed Charge Revenue by approximately £434 to a total of £2,498. An estimate of the final return shows an estimated improvement from 8.4% to 8.88%.
A certain amount of labour difficulty was encountered, principally due to harvest work and emigration and on their peak day 31 local men were employed.
Sales realised approximately £511 and included 1 Grain Grinder; 1 1‑H.P. Motor; 2 Power Packets; 2 Washing Machines; 13 Burco Boilers; 21 Kettles; 30 Irons. There was no great demand for Pumps as, in general, wells are scarce and at a considerable distance from the dwelling houses.
It is pleasing to note that the outside light was popular, a total of 43 being installed.”
