"Clondulane Rural Area, Co. Cork/ Waterford: The development of Clondulane, Mr. Calnan points out, completes the electrification of the Blackwater Valley. There was a nominal loss of 44 consumers, but it should be pointed out that 20 of the losses were duplications of signatures, and a further 10 were houses attached to a now defunct flour‑mill, and which had become derelict. The loss of earnings in the neighbourhood due to the closing of the flour‑mills has been somewhat offset by two factories which Rural Electrification has made possible; one is a woollen mill and the other is engaged in the manufacture of animal food‑stuffs.
The quality and output of labour in the locality is poor, and more than offset a fairly useful saving in materials costs. As a nett result the return fell from 6.17% to 6.04%.
Going was not too easy. The Blackwater country is fairly well wooded and in the low lying places along the river water was encountered particularly in the winter flood conditions.
Sales at approximately £1,000, Mr. Calnan thinks, were low for an area of its size, but competition from traders in Fermoy"

"town and the local co‑operative societies was very keen.
We noted that a snow‑storm during the demonstration caused a blackout when the 38 kV station at Fermoy went dead, and we hope the reference to finishing by candle‑light is merely literary licence, since there should have been a generator as a standby with the demonstration unit."
