The REO News from September 1957 reports that rock was a problem in Dangan.A scanned page from the ESB REO magazine about the Dangan Rural Area. This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
"The number of final reports received from completed areas has not yet risen to meet the present rate of construction of 60 areas per annum.
More Consumers:
What we mainly noted in the reports which were submitted, for Dangan Area by Mr. H. Payne, R.A.E., and for Askeaton Area by Mr. J.F. Ryan, R.A.E., were the large increases in the number of final acceptances. Thus a nett extra 182 consumers were gained in Dangan Area and 135 in Askeaton. The contraction of construction crews adversely affected the economics of both areas. Mr. Ryan expected that the final return in the case of Askeaton would remain approximately as originally calculated. This, of course, represents an actual decrease since the fixed charge revenue had been improved in the meantime by the application of the general increase applied by the Board.
Usual Troubles:
Quite some rock was met with in the Askeaton Area. This proved to be a much greater problem in Dangan where about 650 out of the approximate 1000 holes dug in the County Roscommon part of the area required blasting. Across the border in the Leitrim section the countryside was not very open as high hedges abound and stringing was impeded.
Sales Vary:
It was disappointing to note that in Dangan Area sales amounted to only £262 including 2 pumps, 1 water heater and 1 vacuum cleaner. In Askeaton, however, the picture was much better with a total sales figure of £1,375 for which we agree with Mr. Ryan that Mr. J. Killen, A.O., must be congratulated. His sales included 12 pumps, 1 – 3 H.P. Motor, 1 Tobin Hammer Mill, 6 – 3 Plate Cookers, 2 – 2 Plate Cookers, 1 Animal Food Cooker and other smaller items.
Hopes:
While construction difficulties will always be with us, and while it will still be a difficult task to keep costs to the minimum, we do look forward to receiving brighter reports from areas completed in recent weeks and which will be completed from now on. The fact that a sales figure of over £1,300 could be reached in an area when, as we have been told, things were at their blackest, shows that can be done in the more favourable economic climate which now seems to be developing."
