The REO News from September 1955 tells us that Drangan is a dairying area.
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
“Drangan Rural Area, Co. Tipperary: We here in H.O. knew that Drangan had been over‑canvassed, and were not terribly optimistic about the outcome of construction. We were, therefore, pleasantly surprised to find that, in spite of 68 backsliders, there was a net improvement of 16 consumers, and that the area ratio moved up from 5.48% to 5.85%. The unit cost came out at 37/2d. and the transport figure at 4.61 m.p.u.
Mr. McBride in his report pays tribute to the good work done by Mr. Reddy, A.O., on the consumer side, and by Mr. Walshe, the Supervisor, on the construction side.
Mr. Reddy’s sales reached a good total of £1,002 and he tells us that most of the farmers in the region are members of the local Co‑Op where they can purchase their electrical appliances at a reasonably good discount. Drangan is a dairying area and good pump sales are to be expected. A visit by the salesvan during October or November is strongly recommended. Some caution will be necessary in the matter of pump sales since a number of existing wells are inclined to run dry in a good Summer and, therefore, improvements will be necessary before a pump could be successfully used. We presume it is now well‑known that we have instituted a Water Advisory Service in addition to the Poultry Service in Development Division, and that they are only too willing to help when called upon.”
