The REO News from September 1953 reports that construction was fairly difficult in Kileentierna.
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
"Kileentierna Rural Area, Co. Kerry: Mr. W. Ryan’s report on Kileentierna area opens with the statement that construction was fairly difficult and but for the fine weather might have been extremely hard. Most of this was due to the fact that half the area was either mountainous or boggy and that roads for the most part were narrow and had a very poor surface. Mr. Ryan notes a discrepancy between the amount of line included on the Summary Sheet and the quantity of 50 sq. mm. S.C.A. allowed on the Quantity Sheet. He claims that as a net result, the gross cost allowed was about £600 too low.
Of the original 376 consumers, there were 15 backsliders, of which 2 had become vacant, and 13 additional consumers were consequently rendered uneconomic. 45 new consumers were gained, to bring the final total to 390 and to improve the ratio from 6.24% to 7.13%.
Sales by the Board were low, being principally comprised of 5 Washing Machines; 10 Burco Boilers; 1 Cooker; 9 Kettles; 12 Irons; 1 Deep Well Pump; 1 Wood’s Grain Grinder.
The A.O., Mr. Dowling, is of the opinion that the prospects for sales will improve in the autumn of this year when consumers will have recovered from the initial cost of installation.
Post‑development prospects are fair, as some new houses are being built in the area, and before the construction crew left there were indications of a change of heart on the part of some of the backsliders."
