The REO News from March 1956 tells us of a problem with a fairy rath in Killurin.
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
“Killurin Rural Area, Co. Wexford: Killurin is Mr. M. Keaveny’s first rural area where he took over from Mr. Henning. The area got a certain amount of publicity in the evening papers over the matter of placing a pole on a fairy rath where, apparently, a pole refused to stay in an upright position. We strongly suspect that it may have received some very unfairy‑like assistance. Final figures for cost were not available at the time of writing the report but we do know that 20 extra consumers were gained and that revenue increased by approximately £141. Unit costs for the area at an average of 40/– were not unreasonable but transport was a little high at 6.25 miles per unit.
Sales were rather moderate at a total of £704, due in the main to keen competition from outside contractors. It is calculated that, between them, they achieved a total in excess of £1,500.
We are glad to note that outside lights were a popular feature and that approximately 70% of the householders had installed this very useful fixture.
Mr. Keaveny concludes with a tribute to his Area Clerk, his Supervisor and his Area Organiser, for their assistance in his first area.”
