The REO News from June 1953 reports that outside lighting was exceedingly popular in Kilmore.
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
“Kilmore Rural Area, Co. Wexford: The first thing we note in the report on Kilmore area, provided by Mr. S. Malone, R.A.E. and Mr. J. M. Coade, A.O., is that though the consumers increased from 365 to 400 the return fell from 7.6% to 7.3%. Mr. Malone deals with this drop at considerable length and frankly confesses himself as puzzled. He appreciates, of course, that prices of material increased and it is in line with that that the major variation shows. Indeed the actual labour on the job at approximately £6,000 is somewhat over £1,500 below the estimated labour content of work done. We think that probably the best thing we can do is to pass the report to our friends in Technical Division who, undoubtedly, will help Mr. Malone to straighten out his worries.
The report records that during the construction period Mr. J. Ryan, who was the first Area Clerk appointed in Waterford District, exchanged his field boots for carpet slippers and retired to the District Office.
Sales in the area were excellent at a total of £1,671.10.9d. We were particularly pleased to note amongst the items — 10 Pressure Storage Pumps, 3 Welders, 2 Food Boilers, 5 10‑gal. Burco Boilers, 1 16‑gal. Burco Boiler, 2 Power Packets, 11 Washing Machines and 9 Cookers.
Mr. Malone pays tribute to his Supervisor and chargehands whose work was excellent at a very low unit cost.
It is very satisfying to note that outside lighting was exceedingly popular in Kilmore and that 95% of the farmers have it installed.”
