"Cover Picture

Our Cover Picture last month had an immediate reaction in Lislin Rural Area where Area Organiser Sean Flood and Demonstrator Pat O'Shea decided that they could do a good job with an intimate open-air demonstration for a small group of housewives. (Sean will be in the Louth goal on September 22nd.) On our cover this month you see the set-up, and you will notice that Sean is actually doing the washing for one of the good ladies while Pat talks pumps and washing machines to some of the others.

We must sincerely congratulate both of them on this bit of local enterprise. It seems good common sense to combine the water pump, water heater and the washing machine. Even though prices of the latter may still be high nonetheless the idea must appeal to any housewife.

One man who has already seen the picture suggested that for such an occasion it might be no harm to have specially prepared hire purchase forms ready to give to the consumer. Such a form could give the terms for any combination of the appliances concerned with the detailed figures already worked out.

We recall that Mr. Larry Brennan (whose return we welcomed last month) very successfully practised the technique of combining selling of associated appliances as against consecutive selling.

Of course, a sound knowledge of the details is an important factor for the salesman, and if anyone feels the least bit doubtful as to his capabilities in this direction we can assure him that if he contacts some more knowledgeable person in his District Office or in Development Division he will get all the assistance he requires.

Time spent on demonstrations such as at Lislin and Upperchurch is seldom wasted. Even if a high sales figure does not immediately materialise you have given the consumers concerned considerable food for thought and discussion, and undoubtedly the benefits will ultimately be reaped."
