"Marlfield Rural Area, Co. Tipperary:
The post‑construction report on Marlfield area comes from the joint pens of J. L. Cullen, R.A.E. and J. Coade, A.O. From it we gather that trees and rocks were the principal impediments and the report refers to the available means of drilling rock as “primitive”. No doubt when this issue is read, someone will ask them to elaborate on this rather devastating description, particularly as the method is blamed for the high unit cost which prevailed throughout the area.
In spite of 20 backsliders, there was a net gain of 84 consumers, with an increase in revenue amounting to £477. While the final capital figures are not shown, the percentage return increased from 6.05% to 6.15%.
Sales were good, at a total of £1,703, among which we noted the following items:- 15 Cookers; 16 Kettles; 11 Washing Machines; 43 Vacuum Cleaners (could this be a misprint?); 3 Welders; and 2 Pumps.
This is Mr. Cullen’s first area and we thank him for his observations and suggestions in the matter of local publicity. We recall that he had a period of five weeks sick‑leave, and are glad to know that he is back again on duty and able to pay tribute to his Supervisor, Mr. P. Walsh, (a recent appointment), for the way the crew kept the flag flying during his absence.
We look forward with confidence to greater things in their future joint efforts."
