The REO News from March 1953 comments on the number of backsliders in Rathurles

"Rathurles Rural Area, Co. Tipperary:
At first sight the report on Rathurles, supplied by Mr. P. Healy, R.A.E., would seem a little disquieting, as it discloses that there were 55 backsliders. In a number of these cases, however, the cause of the defections could not be considered unreasonable. Such explanations as “houses becoming vacant”, “houses condemned unfit for habitation”, “tenants under notice to quit” must be regarded as justifiable reasons for refusing to take supply. In the case of “tenants under notice to quit”, these were occupants of ex‑service men’s houses who are no longer entitled to the tenancies. It is expected that the new tenants will take supply under post‑development. To counter the backsliding, 72 additional consumers took supply, resulting in an over‑expenditure of approximately £1,450, with a corresponding increase in revenue of £139. The net result of this is that there should be a slight increase in the final return.
We have already complimented the A.O., Mr. Nix, on his sales total of £2,731. The principal items in this total were: 24 Cookers; 15 Washing Machines; 6 Landruft Food Cookers; 8 Burco Boilers; 5 Shallow Well Pumps; 1 Grain Grinder; 2 10 H.P. Motors (3‑phase); 23 H.P. Motors; 1 1 H.P. Motor; 31 Kettles; 31 Irons and 2 Vacuum Cleaners.
Outside contractors sold approximately 70 Irons; 5 Cookers; 10 Washing Machines; 6 Vacuum Cleaners. About 100 consumers installed outside lights. It is interesting to learn that the Board’s H.P. terms had considerable influence on the amount of heavier appliances sold.
Mr. Healy’s report concludes with a word of praise for the entertainment of the construction crew to a supper and dance organised by the Muintir na Tire Guild after the switching‑in ceremony in Toomevara had been performed by Very Rev. Canon O’Rahilly, P.P."
