"RESULT OF £5 COMPETITION FOR A.Os
The Judges announce that the Prize of £5 is awarded to A.O. Hugh Dunlop, Rossnowlagh who submitted the article published below:
“How to prevent Backsliders: Many tenants, who would like their houses electrified, sign up for A.O. while canvassing. Their main problem is the ‘lump sum’ or initial cost of wiring. A.O. points out that landlord should do that but that it would be better for themselves to do it, in case of rent increase until initial cost is covered. Tenant maintains he won’t be long in house if he can get another, but A.O. knows he’ll be there for ages and insists more or less that tenant do wiring himself, and if he’s leaving house shortly, to get landlord to compensate him, or else take down all wiring and fittings and take them to the new house. Tenant sees some point in that and is a bit consoled. If tenant gets tough about wiring house, A.O. should see landlord and have chat with him about poor tenant who would like the electricity but can't afford the initial expenses. He should try and persuade landlord to put in a light or two like the decent landlords in the other Rural Areas with whom A.O. had no trouble at all.”"
