There was a fair amount of backsliding in Shanagolden according to The REO News from June 1956:
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
"Shanagolden Rural Area, Co. Limerick: From Mr. Scallan’s report we learn that there was a fair amount of backsliding in Shanagolden Rural Area and that though revenue increased by approximately £240, capital costs increased at a greater rate with the unfortunate result that the area return fell from 5.6% to 5.2%.
Shanagolden is a dairying area and it is unusual to find that in such an area construction was fairly difficult, a lot of rock being encountered especially along the banks of the Shannon.
The quality of available labour was not very good and in quantity just barely sufficient.
Sales by Mr. J. Killeen reached the useful total of £1,040 in spite of the fact that many people in the area purchased their requirements in Newcastle, Castleisland and in Limerick city. We noted 7 pumps and 5 cookers among the list of appliances sold."
