A ray of sunshine was provided by the sales figures in Shanahoe according to The REO News from march 1957.
This digital scan from the REO News displays the following text:
"Shanahoe Rural Area, Co. Laois: Mr. M. C. Hayden, R.A.E., had an unusual position to deal with in Shanahoe due to the fact that design, wayleaving, pegging and actual construction all started within a period of five days owing to peculiar circumstances over which there was no control. The chief factor in overcoming the difficulty is stated to be the co‑operation of Materials Division in making a speedy supply of material available. An additional complication was the fact that work was still proceeding in Derryvale area for part of the time, hindering the smooth flow of work.
We are sorry to see that there was a nett loss of 11 consumers due, it would appear, to a slight element of over‑canvassing and to the absence of any local committee. As usual, the cost of supplying the new consumers gained was much higher than what was saved on the backsliders and the results was a decrease of 0.2% in the area return. A further decrease of 0.2% is attributed to the higher level of Revision 12 costs.
A ray of sunshine and a bright ray indeed is provided by the sales figures reached by Mr. Poole, A.O. The total figure for the area was £2,212 and the items included; 12 Water Pumps, 15 Washing Machines, 1 Hammer Mills, 6 Motors, 2 three‑Plate Cookers, a 15 kW Grain Drier, with many other items. As Mr. Hayden puts it “In an area of 257 consumers, these figures speak for themselves. Any comment is superfluous”.
Mr. Hayden thanks all who helped him in carrying through his first complete area, with a special word for his Supervisor, Mr. F. White and Mr. T. Keegan."
